Family business

The foundations of Vervoer Transmet were laid at the end of the 1930s by Louis Smets and his wife, Emma Pardon. In 1936, Louis Smets started the company with 2 lorries, carrying cargoes of straw and pigeons in Belgium and France. Since those early days, the Vervoer Transmet business has evolved significantly, from a local trade into a whole road haulage industry. Not only has the transport company from Boutersem been part of the whole socioeconomic (r)evolution and witnessed it from the front row, but it has also actively driven the industry forward. In 1991, under the management of Herman Smets, Vervoer Transmet relocated to a new operating complex of over 32,000 m² in Boutersem-Roosbeek, complete with a state-of-the-art workshop and truck-wash facilities.

Quality makes all the difference! To be able to continue offering a wide range of logistics services, further expansion was inevitable and a few years later, Vervoer Transmet expanded its facilities, adding an 8,000 m² warehouse.

The title of “Haulier of the Year 1999” was the proverbial cherry on the cake deriving from these changes. The title was not only just reward for all the hard work done during the 20th century, but it also marked the beginning of the 21st century and a new age in which technology, digitisation and globalisation broke through and came to the fore. For example, in 2000 the whole fleet was fitted with onboard computers. It was also in that year that Vervoer Transmet passed the milestone of 100 employees. In 2015 all trailers were equipped with a tracking system to meet the ever-growing demand from customers for real-time information.

Since then, the third generation of the family has arrived at the company to strengthen the team. And since we began the business back in 1936, the number of employees has grown to ±150 today:

Vervoer Transmet operates in three sectors: logistics, covered road haulage and tanker transport. We make every effort to provide a full range of services within each of these niche areas. Covered road haulage deals with a whole range of goods, including food and non-food, full cargoes and part-loads. Our tanker truck transport business mainly concerns the carrying of detergents and derivative products, including ADR.

Vervoer Transmet makes the difference by offering its customers comprehensive logistics solutions. Our logistics activities, working out of 8,000 m² of storage and warehousing space, help supplement and expand our range of services. Being able to offer a total package to customers creates important added value for our company. We cover simple Cross-docking facilities to more complex order-picking services. Our aim is to achieve total optimisation of the supply chain and transport management.
